Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/Olaf I of Norway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Firstly, this article is incredibly unprecise but also it's not terribly informative.

1. Sagas state that he was born on a islet at the Randsfjorden. See http://www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/hst/european/heimskringla/HeimskringlaVolume3/chap1.html

2. He did not precisely grow up in Novograd, but Gardarike. Novograd was (as far as I can gather) considered by vikings to be the capitol city of Gardarike. Other cities in Gardarike might have been modern Kiev and Rostock. All the way upto 1200 A.D. Russia were called Gardarike in Scandinavia. See http://www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/hst/european/heimskringla/HeimskringlaVolume3/chap21.html. Here it's stated that he was born in Gardarike (Russia).

3. There is not one single word about him working towards consolidating Norway as one christian country (and nearly achieving so), neither about him founding the (then) Norwegian capitol of Norway; Trondheim in 997. This is of imperative importance in Norwegian history, something which is taught at primary school in Norway.

There is also a great deal of confusion in general between Olaf_I_of_Norway and Olaf_II_of_Norway, something which perhaps should be clarified, although these wikipedia article seems to have a fairly good understanding of this.

Lastly, this is a much more important king than what this article give the impression of. Not only for the history of Norway, but indeed Scandinavia in general.

NOTE: I am not a historian, nor an expert in Norse history in general. However, as I do live in Trondheim and have an eager hobbyist interest in Norse I am able to spot errors here. This article probably needs to be written by an expert on the subject!
