WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi,

I think the comment you removed here was a request to do this. Might have been a good idea just to have left a note with that user asking what he was on about. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:24, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Many apologies. Out of interest, how on earth did you make sense of that? I remember seeing it, thinking it might relate to something and checking the user's contributions. When I found that it was the users only contribution I (incorrectly) assumed it was just nonsense. In hindsight the best course of action would have been that users talk page. Thanks for cleaning up after me! Best, Rambo's Revenge (talk) 16:29, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
On slow days I enjoy a bit of a puzzle. I can appreciate that the templating system can make it very difficult for newcomers to figure out where they're meant to edit things, or even where to discuss them. Oh, and I do watch pages that I post to. :) Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 21:14, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Well that is a very noble hobby to occupy those slow days. Wikipedia needs more Chris Cunningham's. User:Chris Cunningham (at work) perhaps? Rambo's Revenge (talk) 21:43, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Image check?

Not sure about the photo at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Gunsmoke television episodes/archive2; can you ensure licensing etc. is fine? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 22:35, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Think we can probably WP:AGF on this one. The size of it makes it highly likely that the uploader had access to the digitised original and it isn't a low-res copyvio from a website. Seeing as the uploader's other contributions include this on en.wiki and File:CMW 1955.jpg is their only other contribution to Commons, I think the claim of a relationship to CMW is highly feasible. The only slight sticking point in this image is that (I believe) strictly speaking the aunt is the owner to the rights and only they can release it. The niece/nephew may well have obtained permission to do this, however, which would be acceptable. Personally, I'm pretty okay with it, although this is a type of image situation I have little experience with (does anybody?). Rambo's Revenge (talk) 00:09, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
OK. Thanks for looking into it. Dabomb87 (talk) 23:16, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Also, could you check back in at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of invasive species in the Everglades/archive1? It looks like the images have been either relicensed or deleted. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 04:53, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
Have done, I forgot what I minefield images can be. Rambo's Revenge (talk) 17:45, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
One more look? Moni removed the image from the list. Dabomb87 (talk) 22:48, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

DYK for Administration (football)

Updated DYK query On March 10, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Administration (football), which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

SUL usurp request

See this question.RlevseTalk 01:31, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Responded. Rambo's Revenge (talk) 16:54, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Rating required

The article 54th Filmfare Awards requires importance and quality rating under Wikipedia:WikiProject Awards and Prizes. I request that you please look into the article and give your ratings.

Ankitbhatt (talk) 14:39, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Done. Rated Low because it is only one specific year for a specific rating. Filmfare Awards would be of higher importance (probably "mid" although I actually know nothing about the award). Rambo's Revenge (talk) 15:00, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

SUL

Done. See note there.RlevseTalk 21:36, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

A record of your Day will always be kept here.

For a userbox you can add to your userbox page, see User:Rlevse/Today/Happy Me Day! and my own userpage for a sample of how to use it.RlevseTalk 00:12, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Needs a second look when you get the chance. Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 04:48, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry you needed to remind me about this. Thought I'd already revisited. Thanks for keeping on top of everything. Rambo's Revenge (talk) 16:20, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Hey,

I noticed you are a member of the WikiProject Awards. I have just nominated Nobel Prize for FA and I would love to have some comments or support on the nomination page. Since you are in the same project I hoped you could check it out perhaps? --Esuzu (talkcontribs) 22:20, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Have checked it out but, IMO, its quite a way of FA still. Rambo's Revenge (talk) 11:38, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes I can see that. Well thanks for checking anyway. However, you seem to know what you are doing and I saw that you thought good grammar is sexy. So would like to help in sexing the Nobel Prize up a bit? Doing some copy-editing? --Esuzu (talkcontribs) 23:12, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
