Re:Kastellorizo[edit]

Ciao Pantazis
and thanks for writing on my talk page. First of all, let me tell you that I am envying you a lot, since you are living in a real angle of paradise! I was in Kastellorizo three times (2006-7-8) but unfortunately only on a daily basis, from Kas. I would really like to spend a week or so there, since I think that it is one of the most magic islands on the earth. But now back to business: :-) on Wikipedia there is a guideline, WP:SPAM that prohibits the insertion of commercial links. This means, in case of touristic places, links reporting addresses of hotels, restaurants, and so on, which are using the popularity of wikipedia in order to find customers. Writing some more or less interesting info together with the commercial one is an old technique which is used in order to mask the link as an useful (for wikipedia) one. Now, I believe you when you say that it all is done on a voluntary basis, but these addresses remain. What I could see on the English version did not impress me much, and my knowledge of Greek is limited to 5 years of Ancient Greek in the Liceo now almost forgotten (except the beginning of Antigones :-)). Moreover, this is wikipedia in english, so the greek version cannot be read by 99 % of the people... What I can do is to ask on the discussion page of the project spam the opinion of other participants about your link. What do you think about that? If the opinion will be negative, you can always create a page about Kastellorizo on Wikivoyage, our sister project about tourism, put your link there and link this page on the wikipedia page. Hi Alessandro,

I have created a talk page for Kastellorizo, not sure how it will end. As I state there, I am really getting discouraged by all this, especially as I am (indirectly) compared(?) to frauds who use commercial links (just think about it, it was not something diplomatic to say). I wonder what is there for me to gain in terms of tourism... (my work is making education efficient, and currently we are collaborating with schools in South East Asia - will be back to Kastellorizo in a few days).

And you said the English part did not impress you. What about the enigmas part? Seriously, where else can you find this information? (as well as the accompanying photos). I strongly believe I am being hit well below the belt, while I have also explained many of those aspects on the discussion page again and again. The phones link is just one sub-page, there are so many other ones. You make it sound as if everything was built around this list, how could that be possible?

Don't get me wrong, you are probably a nice guy, and I appreciate that you have knowledge of Greece and Greeks, but for you, as you said, this is going "back to business" (not sure if it was in a touristic way). In my case though, it is about giving my heart for the island I love. Some day this may be understood.

Buona Serra

Hallo Pantazis, I read only now the enigmas part, and it is very nice. Moreover, I saw that on the talk page of the article there is another negative comment about the insertion of your web site. Nevertheless, I will ask an opinion to another member of the wikiproject:spam. By the way, the idea of reorganizing the site it not bad at all. Greetings from stormy Switzerland Alex2006 (talk) 17:33, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alessandro,

This is exactly what I wish. I do not want favours, but also I hoped people are fair with this site's scope. They only way to do this, is to go through it in more detail (and I do understand that this needs time). Thank you for the comments regarding the enigmas part, and this year, there is chance there will be more prizes to be won again by people related to Kastellorizo. I could provide all information for the different sections (old photos, videos, vintage maps, technical features, etc) in super detail, but as I had stated before, this site is made piece by piece, and in the next months it should grow significantly. You would be amazed of the number of appreciation we receive about it, I could simply forward you some of the emails (even some language specialist scholars volunteered to correct me if they track any grammar or spelling mistakes). Sometimes, I sound harsh, but Kastellorizians who are adapting to an isolated life, tend to become very proud, then expect nothing by others, and in the end always find a way to continue through life. As a proof is the vast wars and attacks this "little dot on the map" has been subjected to, but we still survived. My dad, Constantine (Dino) Houlis, was one of the survivors of the Empire Patrol disaster www.empirepatrol.com (he lives in Australia now). I could go on and on with the depth and variety of information to be added, but I see it as my duty to add them, not as a hassle.

Many regards,

Hi again Pantazis - I just responded to you at Talk:Kastellorizo and wondered whether anyone had formally welcomed you and given you some links to our policies, guidelines, and help resources. If consensus is to keep the external link out of the article here, I want to second Alessandro57's suggestion above - Wikivoyage needs informative articles, would gladly host the link, and we could easily link to the Wikivoyage article in the external links section of the English Wikipedia article.
