Tintin in Tibet

Hello Miniapolis, thanks to you and to the Guild for your copy editing of Tintin in Tibet! Say, I have been putting off making changes to the second paragraph of the Critical Analysis section (in response to an earlier copy editor's suggestion), and today I finally rewrote it a bit, but offline. I will paste it in whenever you reach a stopping point; may I? Prhartcom (talk) 19:57, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

It's done; I think I ensured I was not getting in your way. Feel free to leave a message for me anytime! Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 21:37, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner; I've been busy IRL today, but hope to finish the copyedit tomorrow. In case you'd like to tweak some more, you can tell by the article history where I've been; I work top to bottom, section by section. It really is a fun read! All the best, Miniapolis 23:40, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Hearing that it is a fun read makes all of this worthwhile for me, Miniapolis! Thanks for the feedback. I look forward to hearing any closing thoughts after you finish. Remember, it needs to be ready for FA! Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 01:45, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, another editor began copy editing and I intervened and asked them to wait for you to finish today. Thanks again. Prhartcom (talk) 11:55, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
I don't mind if someone else copyedits also, but I don't edit war. Please keep in mind that WP:VOLUNTEER; I'll get to it ASAP (and, as I said, should finish it today—I want to do a good job :-)). All the best, Miniapolis 13:20, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

This is a bit funny. Remember this punctuation mark? User talk:Magioladitis#No editing solely to remove whitespace. Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 23:30, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Um, not that particular one :-). All the best, Miniapolis 23:53, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Okay. It's the ellipsis you added to join two quoted sentences together (a series of abandonments[56] ... The heroes) and it revealed a bug in their clean-up bot code. I knew at the time it is grammatically correct if a bit unusual. :-) Best to you as well. Prhartcom (talk) 01:58, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

2014 student protest in Kosovo

Hi Miniapolis, I just joined the GOCE and for my first copy edit I selected the article 2014 student protest in Kosovo from the backlog list. I found that the last half of the article had no references cited and I think that issue should be resolved before the CE is completed. I noted this information on the article talk page. I still see this article as available for CE in the backlog list. Have I missed a step? Thank you for your guidance. AutoHen (talk) 22:18, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Welcome to the GOCE, AutoHen, and thanks for your help. The article is still in the backlog because the {{copyedit}} tag is still on it as part of the {{multiple issues}} tag. The 8 and 10 February sections (the last two subsections of the January and February protest and timeline section) are sourced, but the first three subsections aren't. However, that shouldn't affect our ability to copyedit since the topic is clearly notable (i.e. it's in no danger of being deleted). Feel free to finish the copyedit; what I do is remove the copyedit tag before I start, to minimize the chance of edit conflicts. It helps also to edit in as small "bites" as possible. {{Citation needed}} is an inline tag for individual sentences; what you want is {{refimprove section}}, under (not on the same line as) the section header. Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to ask questions. Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 23:42, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I've just removed the empty sections and the c/e tag, and marked the unreferenced section thus. Thanks AutoHen; you can copy-edit the unreferenced sections if you wish, but unreferenced text is subject to removal without notice per WP:OR. GOCE is not Cleanup. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:00, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the stalk, Baffle; I couldn't have put it better myself :-). All the best, Miniapolis 00:02, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Miniapolis and Baffle! I'll return to the topic and finish the copy edit. It's hard to restrain myself from overstepping the copy edit role and doing more than I should, especially since I found the topic compelling. :) AutoHen (talk) 18:39, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Humble Request

Hi Miniapolis. I have hugely reworked the Lucknow article which you peer reviewed (for which i'm very thankful). I request you to copyedit the article.i'm requesting you because the guild looks very afk as of now and i intend to make this a high quality article asap. However, if you are too busy then maybe you can suggest it to someone (or inform me about the editor so that i can ask him) for copyediting. Now,i just need your help.Thanking you. Wikiboy2364 (talk) 00:22, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

I appreciate your request but, as the top of my talk page says, no longer accept direct copyedit requests. Lucknow is moving up the requests list, but everyone ahead of you also wants their article copyedited ASAP and has waited longer; we do the best we can, but there's not enough copyeditors. It's possible that someone will pick it out of the queue ahead of time but if not, maybe someone from WikiProject India would be interested in helping. Please be patient; we're volunteers. All the best, Miniapolis 01:43, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
That was my bad, sorry. I understand what you are trying to say. Wikiboy2364 (talk) 05:00, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Cricket

Because you acknowledged a love of cricket , could you comment on whether the language in my edit here makes sense? The way it was originally did not seem quite right in comparison to the way others have written about maiden wickets.

Also, our friend made a short edit with some stats today and wording that seems consistent with other cricket writers. It seems like fairly common practice for sports editors to update scores and stats without cites – like the community feels those are non-controversial and do not require cites. So, it doesn't seem necessary to nag for cites, huh? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:19, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Sorry if I misled you; although I enjoy watching cricket (a rare treat here in the US), I have a lot to learn about the game (like what a maiden wicket is :-)). One thing I've learned on WP is that here (as elsewhere), you have to pick your battles. All the best, Miniapolis 23:26, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

16 words?

16 words? what about the 8,000+ carryover words?--DThomsen8 (talk) 19:50, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

There was an error, which I corrected, in the table from which I was working. Like you, we're volunteers and do the best we can. The GOCE can always use more coordinators. Miniapolis 22:25, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, my inquiry was far too abrupt, especially for my 16 words only article. I just wanted to keep my hand in the series of drives, while busy with other Wikipedia tasks. --DThomsen8 (talk) 23:09, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Oh, no problem; if it had happened to me, I'd be annoyed too :-). Not sure if Torchiest runs a script or does the table by hand; if the latter, it's a helluva job. Sorry for the snafu. All the best, Miniapolis 01:29, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Just not cricket

Pawan Bariaar (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is back at it, with some kind of grammar/punctuation/spelling problem on every edit, no edit summaries at all, no sources at all, and no evidence that they even read their talk page. Do you want to handle it directly, or should I take it to ANI? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:23, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

May be time for ANI; I wouldn't mind a second opinion. Keep in mind that while edit summaries are "good practice", they are not required; citations are required not for all material, but "all quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged", and talk pages are "for improving the encyclopedia". I don't see any policy or guideline requiring talk-page engagement. While CIR, I'm not sure this editor merits escalating CIR blocks—hence the need for fresh eyes (if you want to pursue this). All the best, Miniapolis 01:26, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
All valid points, though engagement somewhere seems to be required in order to edit cooperatively. We're at 30 articles and counting that need following up on – I'm just trying to keep that number from continuing to grow. Do you have a solution other than ANI that you would like me to use? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 06:16, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject Cricket would be a good place to voice your concerns and to find out if other editors are having a problem with this person too. If I were you, I wouldn't go to ANI before expressing your concerns on the talk pages of the articles in question. Miniapolis 19:38, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

WP:GOCE

Hi there. Just to inform you that Megadeth recently achieved FA status, and your edits played a significant role in that accomplishment. About the activity at WP:GOCE/REQ, I was wondering if you could skip Metallica and take the album instead. I've been planning to take Justice to FA, so that one is more urgent. Thanks for the understanding.--Retrohead (talk) 20:41, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Congratulations on the FA, although you may get an argument from CT on the role of my edits :-). I'll stop by the requests page, and if no one has taken the album I'll do it. All the best, Miniapolis 22:16, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Nicki Minaj

Hi, I was just wondering if you would consider taking a look and perhaps copy-editing the Nicki Minaj page? KaneZolanski (talk) 23:19, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

I appreciate your concern, but as the top of my talk page says I no longer accept copyedit requests because I received too many (the thread above is an exception, since the article in question is at the top of the GOCE requests page). You did the right thing by listing it there; to be fair, though, although other copyeditors may work differently I do articles in order. In the (unlikely) event that the page is nominated for a GAR before it's copyedited, tell the reviewer you're on the GOCE requests list. Good luck and all the best, Miniapolis 00:10, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Copy Edit mentorship

Hi, I'm new to the Guild of Copy Editors and would like a mentor to help me with the process of becoming an excellent copy editor. Do you have time to mentor me? If you don't, don't worry. I can learn on my own. That's what I did with learning about vandalism. Thanks,TheQ Editor (Talk) 23:46, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Welcome to the GOCE. I'm a bit short on time at the moment (just began a GA review of an article which will need some prose-tweaking), but am happy to do what I can to help. Good starting points are the How to copy edit tab on the GOCE home page and WP:COPYEDIT. Also on the GOCE home page is a list of articles needing copyediting, sorted by month. Just click on a month to get that month's articles (the month they were tagged with {{Copy edit}}), pick one and get started. The Manual of Style looks daunting at first, but you'll learn what you need to know as you need to know it :-). Don't forget to add your name to the mailing list, so you're in the loop for our bimonthly month-long backlog-reduction drives and week-long blitzes; the August blitz should be starting soon. Hope this helps; if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 00:04, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Briarcliff Manor

Miniapolis,

Thank you so much for your help with the Briarcliff Manor article draft. Your rewording was brilliant and really helped it along. If you wouldn't mind, I would be very glad if you could write on its FA review. I had to renominate it, the first FA nomination just didn't get enough attention. Any comment you could give would be great, and there's no restriction on who can comment or their level of involvement in writing the article. Here's the link: [1]

Thank you.--ɱ (talk) 01:26, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

As soon as I finish the GAN I'm reviewing, I'll take a look. Good luck and all the best, Miniapolis 14:34, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks.--ɱ (talk) 15:55, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Preneet Kaur

Hi,

On the talk-page of Preneet Kaur, please point out examples of the "persistent disruptive editing" which you cite as reason for sealing that page. There seems to be no justification for your action. Regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.182.189.241 (talk) 15:00, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

It's not "sealed"; it's protected for two weeks from edits by unregistered editors (to be autoconfirmed, you need a four-day-old account with 10 edits) in response to the concerns of other editors and the article history. The editing bar is higher for BLPs than for other articles. You can post any concerns on the article's talk page. Miniapolis 17:18, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

GoCE Mentorship

Hi I'm MirrorFreak, I saw that your available for mentorship. I just recently joined the Guild today after receiving a barnstar for copyediting Walter Wu. I was wanting to know whether you could mentor me in this, as I would like to fully contribute to Wikipedia. Thanks, Mirror Freak 19:01, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome to the GOCE. Yes, barnstars are fun to get (and give). I was where you are a few years ago; I enjoy proofreading and generally improving articles, and the GOCE is a good fit. Be sure you join the mailing list, so you're in the loop for our bimonthly backlog-reduction drives; the next one begins in a few days, on September 1. You may be hearing about the week-long blitz, which begins this Sunday, but it's focusing on the requests page (mostly GANs and FACs where tensions, as you may imagine, can run a bit high :-)). The month-long drives are a laid-back way to get your feet wet. A good place to start is the how-to page, which has links to other instructional stuff. Don't be intimidated; start with the basic guides, and you'll pick up the rest as you go along. Hope this helps; speaking of help, thanks for yours and all the best, Miniapolis 20:45, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

I signed up for the Elimination Blitz also. Could you explain that to me; Meaning, where do we select the articles to copyedit from?Mirror Freak 21:07, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

That's the one-week requests-page blitz I mentioned, which starts Sunday. The thing to remember about request articles is to be as thorough as you can, since many requesters are preparing Good Article or Featured Article nominations and need a thorough copyedit first. I jumped into the deep end when I started too; one of my first copyedits was a 13,000-word request article I spent a whole day doing. The requester was patient, though, and gave me my first barnstar :-). Just follow the instructions for copy editors, and you'll be fine. If you'd rather wait for the September drive, that's OK too; signing up for a blitz (or drive) puts you under no obligation. All the best, Miniapolis 23:17, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Could you tell me how I select an article to copyedit for the blitz and where I can get it from? Thanks, Mirror Freak 12:13, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

From the requests page; older requests are at the top, and check out the instructions for copy editors before you start on Sunday. All the best, Miniapolis 13:55, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Alright. Last question. (I think). How do I find out how many words are in the article I'm copyediting? And how do I find the number of words I copyedited?Mirror Freak 20:54, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

No problem with the questions; I appreciate your enthusiasm. Here are detailed instructions for installing a javascript which calculates page size. Unfortunately, it doesn't count bullet lists; if you're copyediting an article with many (or long) bullet lists, you need to copy-paste the article into a word processor and use its word-count function to get the page size. The number you use is the word count before the copyedit, but if you forget you can use a later word count. The biggest PITA about the drives and blitzes, IMO, is the bookkeeping :-). All the best, Miniapolis 22:15, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Am I allowed to choose an article to copyedit for the blitz right now? I don't mean that I'm going to start editing it now. I mean to put it on hold for tomorrow.Mirror Freak 16:47, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

We're really not supposed to do anything blitz-related until it starts (when, I'm sure, the article will still be available :-)). Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 23:26, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

GA review

Hey Miniapolis. I asked you for a peer review for Lucknow article so that i can make it a GA worthy material. You suggested a copyedit (link? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Peer_review/Lucknow/archive4). I am glad to tell you that the article had undergone a major ce by the guild and have nominated the article for GA review. Hope you can review the article. Thanking you. Wikiboy2364 (talk) 05:05, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry; as a Guild of Copy Editors coordinator, I have more to do as it is than I have time for. Maybe someone from WikiProject India can help. Good luck and all the best, Miniapolis 13:28, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Oh ok, the problem is that i dont know anyone form there and you have been very sincere and kind on the PR. Moreover, i think you helped Allahabad being promoted as a GA, so.. . It's just that yours was the first name it came to my mind about who should review the article. I'm sure the ce is so on point that it should rather be a little easy for you as your only concern was prose. Wikiboy2364 (talk) 14:31, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Allahabad was very hard work; I didn't realize when I agreed to review it that it needed a major copyedit also. I'm very busy with copyediting, and prefer to leave GA reviewing to others. All the best, Miniapolis 14:38, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

GOCE requests

I know. But I requested the other two just after they completed the first two. Junperson (talk) 00:32, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Okay. I didn't know if you knew the rule, and it seemed like a lot of requests one after the other (with the same two copyeditors doing them all). Miniapolis 00:37, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Loving You (1957 film)

I read Valfury's correction, and I think he did a good job with the grammar. I listed the article under GAN, so even though he fixed it, I sure would appreciate a second read by another person to check it. Further suggestions are always welcomed (changing a phrase here or there, clarifying, etc). If the Guild's backed up with work, I think he's correction will do. I don't mean to take more of your time that can be used to help with other articles.--GDuwenTell me! 03:05, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

No problem, and thanks for getting back to me. I'll make a note on the requests page; I'm in the middle of another copyedit, but if no one's double-checked it by the time I'm done (probably in the next day or so) I'll look at it. All the best, Miniapolis 13:22, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
