Non helpful edit[edit]

this edit was not helpful. Nor were some other recent ones you've made. Please reconsider your approach, remembering WP:CIVIL, WP:POINT and in general, behaving collegially. Sarcasm often fails to make the point intended. Tempers are frayed around the highway issue and it would be best if you were calming, whatever your personal feelings might be. ++Lar: t/c 15:07, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so maybe it shouldn't apply to others. But I do have to account for my own failures as an editor here. I'll try to keep WP:CIVIL and WP:POINT in mind, and maybe just keep my mouth shut. But I will never be WP:CIVIL to myself, and I will never regard my edits or my participation in a positive light. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 15:40, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That confuses me, sorry. If you don't think your contributions are positive then what does that mean? ++Lar: t/c 15:42, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Man I know you're probably upset about this whole thing and I am too. But don't make comments like that on WP:ANI, that will make things worse. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 17:46, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The {{copyvio}} template was not meant to be {{subst}}ed. With the exception of the {{AfD}} template, only user talk page tags are customarily {{subst}}ed. Just FYI. - CobaltBlueTony 15:06, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Backcountry[edit]

As far as National Parks in the United States, backcountry refers to areas that cannot be accessed by a road vehicle, or, to be more precise, areas that the public is not permitted to access by road vehicle. Therefore, all visitor centers, lodges and campgrounds that one can drive to are in the front-country. When Congress decided in 1964 to start creating Wilderness areas on already federally protected lands, the objective was to set aside areas that were remote from the front-country and to preserve them so that further modifications and improvements would not happen, thereby ensuring that no vehicles of a motorized nature (including bicycles), oil, gas, mineral extraction and logging would not happen, and no buildings or other modifications would be permitted...so Wilderness is the ultimate backcountry. The term backcountry is best applied in the United States as all areas that the public may not drive their vehicle to to access. I would consider that an island one must sail to to get to is backcountry, unless that island is so built up, that it is too tame to quaify otherwise.--MONGO 20:38, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MN history[edit]

Would you want to create the history subsection in the Minnesota article? It needs to be done but I am terrible at summarizing. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 21:05, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A fellow Geek[edit]

Thanks for your "geeky" catch of the incorrect street type in CLLI code. It seems to me that the geeky part of your edit was the fact that you were hanging out in an article like CLLI code in the first place! Excellent catch, and thanks. Yours Sincerely, a fellow Geek, Mmccalpin 02:45, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MN history and TC Parks[edit]

I don't have a lot of interest in Battle Creek Park; I just thought that its absence in Wikipedia was glaring to me. I thought about doing it after writing articles for Airway Beacon, Indian Mounds Park, Minnesota, and Carver's Cave. I think Theodore Wirth certainly deserves an article. I think my next few articles will be about people who helped develop Minnesota. I'll add references in History of Minnesota as needed. Is there a list of categories somewhere? For example, is there a category for people who are of historical significance in Minnesota? I'm pretty green at this and appreciate suggestions/corrections. Thanks. User talk:Appraiser

Edit[edit]

I see no problems with it, but it has never been bad form for you to edit highway articles. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 01:17, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Northwest Angle[edit]

Right, but that's the border *west* of the Lake of the Woods. We're talking about the border *east* of it, to Lake Superior. --Golbez 05:28, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On roads, again[edit]

Hello. Could you please have a look at this? Once again, we are being told "Minnesota State Highway X" is not a common name, after it was settled in a previous round that it is. Jonathunder 20:09, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Minnesota meetup[edit]

A meetup of Wikipedians in Minnesota is proposed: please stop by the discussion page if interested. Jonathunder 01:55, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder: Meetup October 29, one o'clock, Mall of America. Jonathunder 20:08, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late notice, but there is a change within the mall for the meetup location today: see this page. Jonathunder 15:18, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Elkman, it was really a pleasure to meet you today! Seemed like a whirlwind meetup and I didn't really have enough time to get to chat with everyone I would have liked to. I'm looking forward to seeing you around Wikipedia! Estreya 00:55, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Highway 33[edit]

What are you talking about? --NE2 04:22, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What about that? --NE2 04:50, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Elkman, I would advise not feeding the troll here. I don't think anyone is going to start moving the MN highway articles against the strong consensus of the state project, which even the die-hard road warriors finally accepted. If someone does start disrupting the project, we are on firm ground to stop that. Jonathunder 18:08, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In all honesty, you're not the only one worked up about this. There are plenty of editors and admins here (such as myself) who are more than willing to take the actions needed to resolve this problem without your needing to get involved. That being said, just relax and feel free to contribute anywhere. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 20:33, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the barnstar[edit]

It's muchly appreciated. Sometimes I find it hard to believe I'm almost done with the Florida NHRPs! I'm trying to figure what my next kooky OCD project is gonna be.  :)

Hey, if you want any thoughts on how to do the Minnesota NHRP entries faster, gimme a holler. I use Microsoft Excel for a lot of the tedious repetitive data entry formatting, and I'd be happy to share ideas.

Again, danke for the barnstar. I'd do this stuff anyway, just 'cause, but it's always nice to be noticed. Positively, that is.  :) --Ebyabe 00:14, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ratings[edit]

I thought I would rank a few articles and feel it out to start. So I have just been going on gut feel but I quickly realized that we probably need to agree on what importance cities, parks, lakes etc are. This is what I think: townships low, cities should get mid, except for the major areas (st.cloud, rochester, mankato) which would get high. I think Minneapolis/St.Paul/Twin cities should get top. State parks would probably follow the same ranking, most would get mid except the ones that are known outside of minnesota or are the most visited, like I think splitrock probably needs a high. I think anything that might show up in a normal encyclopedia should get "top" such as minnesota and History of Minnesota since the 1.0 project is using this to put together a publishable encylopedia. I also think that things that "define" minnesota should get ranked as high/top. What are your thoughts? -Ravedave (help name my baby) 05:10, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry[edit]

I didn't know the information was false. It wasn't intentional, sorry about that.. apoligizes. -HappyHarvick2962

No problem[edit]

) Yeah, I didn't mean to edit it as "vandalism", I just saw what was on the Deaths in 2006 page and edited it accordingly. I'll make sure I research further from now on. -HappyHarvick2962

Invitation to new WikiProject[edit]

Since you bestowed that barnstar upon me, I've been encouraged by others to start a new WikiProject. It's WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. Should you feel so inclined, please feel free to join. And spread the word to any other interested parties.  :) --Ebyabe 19:23, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Welcome[edit]

Elkman, thanks for the welcome you dropped on my Talk page! I'm new to editing Wikipedia, so I'm sure I'll find those links handy. I'm interested in updating Minnesota pages and noticed the Wikipedia:WikiProject Minnesota project...and that you just had a meetup. Did anyone jot down a summary of that meeting? I'd like to help. One question: I've randomly added the Minnesota project tag to some Minnesota related pages, but I'm not sure if that is really helpful, is the goal to have those tags on any page that is Minnesota related?, thanks! Mazzmn 05:12, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Elkman, any idea how I can find the location of Historic bridge 5827 in Zumbro Falls ? I wonder if it still exists...I don't think Hwy 60 goes over the Zumbro. Thanks, I tried to grab a picture of it yesterday, but to no avail. -- Mazzmn 02:08, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I swear I'm not wiki-stalking, MN managment plan for historic bridges (PDF) has an image on page 29 of 136 and an exec summary of the bridge on page 97. Page 118 says it is located at 44°16′58″N 92°25′06″W / 44.28278°N 92.41833°W / 44.28278; -92.41833. --Dual Freq 02:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The ID number (5827) is its identification number in the National Bridge Inventory. nationalbridges.com has a list that gives bridge locations, as long as you know the route number and city (or at least county) you want to search for. The MNDOT web site has a Transportation Data and Analysis section that you could explore if you really want to get into the technical side of things. On the other hand, the link that Dual Freq provided above has a lot more historic information about that particular bridge, and it has a lot of excellent information on preservation of historic bridges. I think I'll use some of that information as well. Thanks, Dual Freq. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 03:42, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the pointers, I added an image and article for this bridge. I guess I still have a question. As I understand it, the doc referenced by User:Dual Freq is not public domain since (from Public Domain: ... works commissioned by the government but created by a contractor are still subject to copyright... That just means I can't literally include/upload text and images from the document, but I can use the facts and information as long as I include a reference???? thanks again--Mazzmn 22:54, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

T-26 GA Review[edit]

Hi Elkman, thanks for moving the Template:Islam in India to the proper page. I wasn't aware that I'd misspelled it. Mohammed Malvankar 17:29, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: your advice[edit]

So, in other words, I shouldn't say what I feel unless what? From what I've seen, if you keep your head down and work on articles and try hard (like you have), all you get for it is a slap upside your head and a 'pipe down over there' from some pointy admin. At any rate, I am going back to working on my articles , the ones I've created in the past few days, since they're very skeletal and undersourced. --Elaragirl ||||||Talk|Count 22:26, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why fucking bother?[edit]

Why in the hell am I wasting time writing articles about Minnesota history and Minnesota historical figures when I could be writing articles about some 16-year-old high school student or stirring up trouble by arguing for the deletion of an organization? Apparently, both of those pursuits are better for Wikipedia than writing articles about some long-dead colonel who built a bunch of limestone buildings near the airport. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 04:54, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry you feel that way. Of course, by the same token, someone could ask why bother writing about Chinese art or history when I could be writing about things in entirely the wrong language or spending time deleting pages that affect no one at all? Bitterness serves zero purpose. --ElaragirlTalk|Count 14:02, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism warning[edit]

Thank you for experimenting with the page Josiah Snelling on Wikipedia. Your test worked, and it has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you may want to do. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia, as you did to Lawrence Taliaferro. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you.

Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, as you did to History of Minnesota, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia.

This is your last warning.
The next time you vandalize a page, as you did to Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Elaragirl/a, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia.

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing. However, unconstructive edits, such as those you made to Battle of Fort Ridgely, are considered vandalism. If you continue in this manner you may be blocked from editing without further warning. Please stop, and consider improving rather than damaging the work of others. Thank you.

This is your last warning. The next time you remove content from a page, as you did to Special:Newpages you will be reported to administrators

Hey[edit]

I hope you're not feeling too badly about that MfD. My concern about WP:POINT was not directed at you, but at another participant in the discussion. I don't believe your nomination was made in bad faith, either, and I accept that the page could be seen differently by different people. As for giving yourself vandalism warnings - seriously, dude, you do good work, and I know there are many people who appreciate it. Take a bit of a break, maybe - sometimes things around here get a little stressful, I totally appreciate that. If you feel like a rant, come on over. Cheer up, and take care :) riana_dzasta 14:27, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

... I could take the page down if you really are upset by it, Elkman.. :( worried --ElaragirlTalk|Count 14:32, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Leave it. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 14:33, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another warning[edit]

This isn't a vandalism warning per se, but:

This is your last warning.
The next time you do badly at mountain biking, as you did last night at Lebanon Hills Regional Park you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Next time, lose some weight (to develop physical fitness), learn to ride over rocks and logs without having to come to a dead stop, and TRY DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER.

Heh, OK, that made me laugh. An embarrassing, snorty laugh. riana_dzasta 14:35, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing. However, blowing an O-ring, such as you did at Wazee Lake, is considered vandalism. If you continue in this manner you may be blocked from editing without further warning, or at least decertified. Please stop, and consider assembling the equipment correctly next time. Thank you.

Did you really want to be blocked?[edit]

I'm puzzled. Self reporting to WP:AIV? What's going on? You're now indefinitely blocked by User:Steel359. Is this really what you wanted??? --Durin 15:43, 17 November 2006 (UTC) (p.s.; while blocked, you can edit your talk page).[reply]

Yes, please tell me what's going on. -- Steel 15:54, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Elkman, there are other ways to take a Wikibreak. Can I help? Jonathunder 16:00, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Elkman, people do care about bridges and historic places, be they in Minnesota, Indiana, France, the bottom of the sea, or the moon. Is this all about the naming dispute with SPUI or is something else involved as well? You kindly welcomed me when I was a new user, and I'd hate to see some silly little dispute drive you away. Is there anything I can help you with? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs) 16:06, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Multiple things:
    • I shouldn't have gotten involved with the MfD for Esperanza. I'm not sure why I thought my opinion was relevant. This is a minor matter.
    • I had absolutely no right to propose Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Elaragirl/a -- I should have talked the issue over first. Or, maybe still, I should have minded my own business. This is the part I can't make any excuses for.
    • I read Special:Newpages and I see a lot of entries about people making pages for themselves ("Cody is a high school student in Modesto, California and he's really cool!") or their bands (usually with a MySpace link). Josiah Snelling, meanwhile, never made his own page. It seems like Cody is more interested in reading about himself than some long-dead guy who built a stone fort near the airport.
    • I still can't ride through the rock gardens at Lebanon Hills Regional Park, or ride fast enough with the rest of the group. Not a Wikipedia matter, but it is another thing I've done wrong lately.

The naming dispute about Minnesota highways isn't a concern for me any more. I made a load of bad edits in that episode, but since the matter has been decided (albeit with bad feelings in some cases), I haven't done anything to watch over it.

Regards, --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 16:31, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So, what can we do to help you return to editing productively? Jonathunder 16:58, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll answer on this page tomorrow after the block expires. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 17:02, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As far as my page, Elkman, I'd happily get rid of it rather than lose you as a Wikipedian. I saw nothing wrong with your AfD of it. I'm stressed, you're stressed, and after looking at the trainwreck at the highway pages, I'm not surprised you're totally frustrated. As for the newpages....some people are idiots. Maybe I am an idiot. But your contributions are valuable and no one and nothing can say they aren't. --ElaragirlTalk|Count 17:26, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever's going on...[edit]

Whatever it is, if I can help, I will. Firsfron of Ronchester 17:14, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Elkman,
I've deleted your userpage, per your request. I don't think there was anything that merited keeping for "evidence". I have felt for a long time, however, that you are spiraling downward, and, as I have a lot of respect for you and your contributions, I can't help but wonder what actually happened. Yes, I know, there was an edit war with SPUI, but he hardly edits the 'pedia anymore, and the number of users who haven't had disputes with him is probably smaller than those who have. If there is something I can do to help you, I hope you will let me know. Firsfron of Ronchester 05:03, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Since it's a problem with my behavior, and/or my inability to handle frustration in a constructive way when something goes wrong, I'm not sure what anyone else can do to help. It's not really even about the edit war with SPUI any more, though I certainly did a ton of bad things in that case. If I could learn to manage stress in a way that didn't harm Wikipedia, that might help. And I really do need to figure out how to keep my nose out of other people's business that doesn't affect me, like the signature wars, the MfD for Esperanza, and goodness knows how many other things I should have just ignored.
Also, the comments above about Lebanon Hills Regional Park and Wazee Lake are relevant, in regard to various failures I had recently at both locations. That's part of the stress, even though my instructor at Wazee Lake said I did okay. I'm not convinced. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 06:48, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

National register of Historic Places[edit]

I notice that you're adding {{WikiProject National Register of Historic Places}} to places of histrical significance, but in some cases they are not listed on the List of Registered Historic Places in Minnesota. Are you trying to follow the list, or expanding it to places that perhaps should be on the list? Appraiser 13:44, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The one I noticed was Indian Mounds Park, Minnesota which probably shouldn't be in the category. Appraiser 18:09, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your request. I am only posting the data to 'boron additive' now, and there will be no product 'promotion'. I am only an avid user of the additive - not a representative or advertiser.

Please take into consideration the fact that this is not pseudo-science, but is in fact internationally recognized by scientists in many laboratories. I do feel there should be a link to the only known distributor, for the use or getting more information or obtaining the product for use.

I will tag holdon until I become more familiar with citations, so I can make the reports and other resources linked clearly and understandably.

Question unanswered from last month[edit]

Nothing will help. Once a bad editor, always a bad editor. Once an editor with a block log, always an editor with a block log. And the offenses that led to this block log (and those that led up to last July's fiasco) won't go away, either. It doesn't matter if I never commit those offenses again -- I should have never done those things in the first place. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 03:42, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
