K C Surendra Babu was the 1997 batch IPS officer, who was killed in a landmine explosion by Maoists on January 5, 2005[1].

Surendra Babu, the Munger Superintendent of police (SP), his driver, bodyguard and four armed policemen were killed when the joint team of Munger and Jamui police which had gone to conduct raids on Maoists' hideouts was returning to Munger. In the Lakshmipur forests near Bhimbandh, about 48 km from Munger, the extremists detonated the remote-controlled landmine and blew up their jeep.

Surendra Babu, who hailed from the tribal hamlet of Narsimpalli in Bukkapatnam mandal in Anantapur district, joined the IPS in 1997 after completing his engineering in 1992. He was assigned the Bihar cadre and had eventful stints as Purnea superintendent of police and commandant of the Bihar Military Police's 18th battalion. On December 18, he had busted an illegal arms factory. He had been transferred from Sitarmarhi district to Munger only a fortnight before his assasination.

He was cremated with state honours at Nalgoandla in Ramachandrapuram in his native state of Andhra Pradesh[2].
