Palestine, officially known as the State of Palestine, is a country in the Levantine region of Western Asia. It officially consists of two non-contiguous territories — the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The West Bank shares borders with Israel and Jordan, while Gaza shares its borders with Israel and Egypt, on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Palestine have a population of 5.5 million people and is spread across an area of 6,500 km. The country is considered a homeland by the Palestinians, who are ethnically Arabs.

Palestine is historically known as the Holy Land for Christians, Muslims, and Jews as well as for Samaritans, Mandaeans , and Druze. It has been ruled by various kingdoms such as the Kingdom of Israel, Babylonian, Persian Empire, Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Islamic Caliphate, Crusades, Ayyubid, Mamluk, and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire ruled Palestine for 400 years, until World War I. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the British government established Mandatory Palestine and supported the Zionist movement, by facilitating immigrants Jews. This increased tensions between Jews and Arabs.

After WWII, the UN proposed a Partition Plan for Palestine, but a civil war ensued, and the plan was not implemented. Following Israel's establishment in 1948, neighboring Arab countries invaded, leading to the Arab-Israeli War. The All-Palestine Government was formed but had limited jurisdiction in Gaza. Palestine is recognized by 138 UN member states. In the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. In 1988, Yasser Arafat, as Chairman of the PLO, declared the establishment of the State of Palestine. Following the Oslo Accords in 1993, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) was formed to govern parts of the West Bank and Gaza. After Hamas gained power in the 2006 elections, a conflict with Fatah led to Hamas taking control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, following Israel's disengagement.

The West Bank contains 165 Palestinian enclaves that are under partial Palestinian rule, but the remainder, including 200 Israeli settlements, is under full Israeli control. Palestine's mid-year population in 2021 was 5,227,193. Gaza is the largest city in the country. Although Palestine claims Jerusalem as its capital, most of the city is under the control of Israel as a result of the 1967 war, except a few parts. Currently, the administrative center is based in Ramallah, the financial hub of Palestine. Palestine is a member of the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the G77, the International Olympic Committee, as well as UNESCO, UNCTAD , and the International Criminal Court. The country has the highest number of educated people in the entire Arab world. Palestine is believed to hold massive oil and gas reserves.

Palestine, officially known as the State of Palestine is a sovereign nation located in the Levant region of West Asia. It is officially recognized as a state by the United Nations and numerous countries. Palestine shares borders with Israel to the east and north, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest. The state comprises the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Its strategic location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Basin and the Arabian hinterlands has shaped its unique heritage, influenced by religious diversity and historical significance. The population of Palestine exceeds five million people, and it covers an area of 10,452 square kilometers (4,036 square miles). Jerusalem is proclaimed capital, while Gaza and Ramallah are other important urban centers. Palestine has a rich history and a distinct cultural identity. The official language is Arabic. The Arab culture holds a prominent place in the daily life of Palestinians, defining their traditions, arts, and social customs. The majority of Palestinians practice Islam, while Christianity also has a significant presence, particularly in Bethlehem and other Christian-majority areas.

Palestine's ancient history spans thousands of years, with its crossroads location witnessing the rise and fall of empires, shaping world history. The Canaanites, Israelites, Semitics, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines all left their mark on the land. In addition to its historical significance, Palestine holds profound religious importance for Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Sacred sites such as the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque draw countless pilgrims and visitors each year. Throughout history, the region has seen periods of coexistence and conflict between different religious and ethnic groups. Notably, during the Middle Ages, when Jewish communities faced persecution, they found refuge and protection under Muslim rule in Palestine and the wider Islamic world. The Ottoman Empire, which controlled Palestine from the 16th century until its collapse at the end of World War I, provided a sanctuary for Jews fleeing persecution in Europe. The end of the Ottoman rule marked a new chapter in Palestine's history. Following World War I, the British Empire assumed control of the region under the League of Nations mandate. The British Mandate for Palestine, established in 1920, brought significant changes to the political and social landscape of the area, setting the stage for the conflicts and struggles that would follow.

The conflict has its roots in the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, which led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the creation of a large Palestinian refugee population. Subsequent Arab-Israeli wars, including the Six-Day War in 1967, resulted in occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. In 1988, the PNC, the legislative body of the PLO, declared the establishment of Palestine. Peaceful resolution gained momentum with the signing of the Oslo Accords in the 1990s. These agreements, negotiated between Israel and the PLO, aimed to establish a framework for peace and the eventual creation of Palestinian state. However, the implementation of the Oslo Accords faced significant challenges, including the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories and ongoing security concerns. In 2007, internal divisions between Palestinian political factions led to a takeover of the Gaza Strip by Hamas. Since then the West Bank is governed by the Palestinian Authority led by Fatah and the Gaza Strip falls under the control of Hamas.

The modern establishment of the State of Palestine stems from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the pursuit of self-determination by the Palestinian people. The Palestinian Authority governs parts of the West Bank, while Hamas controls the Gaza Strip. Efforts towards a peaceful resolution with Israel continue, with negotiations and international mediation playing a crucial role in the pursuit of lasting peace and stability in the region. Palestine faces various challenges, including political disputes, socio-economic disparities, and the impact of the Israeli occupation. The state strives to build and strengthen its institutions, promote economic development, and improve the well-being of its citizens. International recognition and support are crucial in advancing the Palestinian cause and achieving a just and lasting resolution to the conflict. Palestine is a member of several international organizations, including the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
