Merkel → Merkel (disambiguation) – it should be moved in order to make a redirect from Merkel to Angela Merkel, similar to Goethe -> Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Jón + 09:57, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
- Support Yes, I think she's prominent enough for this treatment. Compare to Obama or Sarkozy. --BDD (talk) 17:16, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
- Support as per nom. LCS check (talk) 12:28, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- Indeed, a {{redirect}} at the top of the article is the right thing here. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:36, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose - we don't in normal speech or writing say "Merkel" of a European politician unless being rude. It's different with mega-notable deceased politicians like Churchill or Roosevelt. Obama is a virtually unique surname, Sarkozy (surname) is unique to one family in France, Merkel (surname) is common. In ictu oculi (talk) 02:38, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- No one's proposing we rename Angela Merkel, however. The question is what we think a reader is most likely looking for when he or she searches for "Merkel." Try a general or News Google search, and she pretty clearly leads in the results. The surname only is very common in headlines—surely that's not rude? --BDD (talk) 05:36, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- Support. People searching for "merkel" are almost certainly looking for the German leader. That may change after she leaves office, but for now she is primary topic for the term. older ≠ wiser 12:09, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- Support. Yes, we do frequently refer to Angela Merkel (and most other politicians) simply using their surnames and she is clearly the best-known person to bear it. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:20, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
