Scope

Overall, I'm struggling to see the distinction between location-based game and location-based video game. I think they should be merged. Both tend to talk about using technology and using GPS for the game. Echopixel (talk) 20:12, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

I’m feeling the same way. It seems like, at present, this article is about an umbrella term that covers both location-based video games and games which track players’ locations but which aren’t video games. The article uses “urban games” for these latter ones.

My big concerns are that 1)The umbrella term “location-based game” for both of these is something that nobody is using anywhere outside of a small academic circle in the late 2000’s; and 2)”Urban games,” while certainly a unique little phenomenon, were so limited even in their heyday that secondary sources on them are scarce.

So article is about a term that captures exactly two (2) things, one of which already has a much better article and the other of which we’re going to have a hard time coming up with sources on. I think.

Possibility of merging "Location-based game" with "Geolocation-based video game".

Dear Wikipedians,

I have skimmed through the articles Geolocation-based video game and Location-based game and I don't really see a reason why they should exist independently. I don't think I am qualified to judge the merge-abillity of the two articles. Can someone more experienced than me judge the two articles?

Merge proposal

I agree with @MekuMeku216: above that geolocation-based video games should be part of location-based games. It seems that location-based non-videogames are minimally discussed in the article, and it is mostly about video games anyway. Niashervin (talk) 14:19, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

I concur with the opinion that the articles should be merged. The legality section seems like it would equally apply to the original article, and the original article would make more sense if it talked about the video game context in a combined manner with the analog versions of such games. Merging the two into a singular article also makes the question of whether or not Geocaching is, strictly speaking, a Video Game or not a question which does not need to be answered. Merging the articles also serves in the context that these games are best understood in their Video Game context primarily, but not wholly, and it makes sense for the one article to be a larger, more substantive article then have the more specific context have a larger article than the broader category of such games.
