Crore corrections[edit]

Surely 80 Crore is more than 65 Crore in USD? 81.98.10.119 (talk) 22:16, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jailer movie collection falsely reported. It suppose to be 650+ crores. Review the citation links from various prominent reliable source.[edit]

Jailer collection has been falsely reported. This really concerns the followers of wiki. Please report correct collection. Real collection is 650+ crores (Indian money). Citation: Hindustan times, times of India, India.com , business today.

When various reliable sources conflict each other; only the Latest reports are accepted. As per the discussions made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film/Indian cinema task force.
The Latest report ([1] from 23 November 2023) states 607 crores. 𝓥𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷24𝓑𝓲𝓸 (ᴛᴀʟᴋ) 13:53, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Even after posting various reliable newspaper statements, still it considers to be conflict? It's joke. I'm a theater owner, I took jailer movie distribution in south of tamilnadu. If that's the case, Leo movie collection entirely made up and proxy bookings. As a film distributor I can prove it.

Jailer and Leo[edit]

There are various trustable sources which reported that Jailer did collect 650 crs worldwide during its entire run. I have given 2 such sources below, one from NDTV and another from India Herald. So Jailer worldwide gross needs to be updated.

https://www.ndtv.com/entertainment/jailer-success-bash-rajinikanth-tamannaah-bhatia-anirudh-and-others-4399914

https://www.indiaherald.com/Movies/Read/994631436/Jailer-grossed-Rs-crore-in-terms-of-worldwide-boxoffice-collection#google_vignette

Coming to the topic of which film between Jailer and Leo ended up grossing more for the year 2023. I have provided a link to a youtube video below in which a roundtable was conducted by Baradwaj Rangan (a national award winning film critic and the editor in chief of GalattaPlus) with the leading directors from Kollywood like ManiRatnam, Vettrimaaran, where he listed down the top grossers in Kollywood for the year 2023, where Jailer was listed at the top followed by Leo. Watch the video between the times 17:26 and 17:40. Baradwaj Rangan is a trustable source who interacts with the industry people and has first hand information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq8pzMIUaOM

Another source which I would like to quote is Valaipechu Bismi (Film journalist and editor of Tamilscreen.com), who constantly interacts with various distributors and tracks film collections closely. Watch the below youtube video between the times 2:00 and 2:20, where he has mentioned Leo's collections are 30-35 crs lesser than Jailer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT-E6IjClN0

Another source which I would to provide is Trichy Sridhar who is the joint secretary for the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, who has first had information on collections from theatricals. Watch the video between the times 2:50 and 3:00

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY3It7eXsmI

Based on the above provided sources, Jailer should be the No1 grosser for the year 2023. Udayasankar sk (talk) 16:50, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Sid95Q: Ur opinion on srcs? RangersRus (talk) 13:16, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Keivan.f: please see Udayasankar sk's srcs. Do you call them reliable? RangersRus (talk) 17:59, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I rarely cite YouTube videos myself, but it all depends on the nature of the video. If it is published by a reputable organization that is not associated directly with the subject at hand and can be traced to a reliable publisher, then it probably can be cited. But I would not use it if there are secondary sources available in prose. In this instance I cannot be of much help because I'm not familiar with reliable Tamil websites that report on entertainment news, but looking at those three videos, I would personally not cite the first two. Maybe for the second one, you can find an article published by the journalist on the subject. That ensures what he has published has at least been peer reviewed. Keivan.fTalk 18:11, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
From WP:NOYT, "YouTube and other video-sharing sites are generally not considered reliable sources because anyone can create or manipulate a video clip and upload without editorial oversight, just as with a self-published website."RangersRus (talk) 13:35, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have provided direct Video Links to the uploaded videos which were uploaded by the channels themselves like GalattaPlus, which cannot be manipulated by anyone because its their channel. In the first video the roundtable was conducted by Bharwaj Rangan who is the editor in chief of GalattaPlus and the video was uploaded through their channel. So no manipulation is possible.
Also NDTV has listed only 5 movies which grossed more than 650 crores worldwide in 2023, which includes Pathan, Jawan, Jailer, Gadar2 and Animal, which means Jailer is the highest grosser from Kollywood for 2023.
https://www.ndtv.com/entertainment/decoding-2023-the-golden-year-for-indian-cinema-4677666 Udayasankar sk (talk) 17:02, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wait for 3rd opinion. I will add that there are many articles that say Leo overtaking Jailer as highest gross. RangersRus (talk) 17:56, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I didnot understand what you meant by "wait for 3rd opinion".
I agree there are inconsistencies reported between various sources on which movie is highest Kollywood grosser for 2023, there are few regular tracking sites which has quoted final gross of Leo to be between 585-590 crores, and few marking the final BO gross as 620 crs. Likewise for jailer some quoted it as 610 and some at 625, some at 635 and few others as 650+ crs. At the best how I can see this is, both the movies have done more or less the same collections and potentially there is a tie breaker between them, and no one can tell with certainty that one movie outgrossed the other. So it would be prudent to mark both the movies as the hightest grossers of 2023. Udayasankar sk (talk) 16:32, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to WP:ICTFSOURCES, only the box office collections reported by Bollywood Hungama and Box Office India are considered reliable. Other than the BO figures and gossips Pinkvilla.com is mostly reliable. 𝓥𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷24𝓑𝓲𝓸 (ᴛᴀʟᴋ) 17:03, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BO figures on Jailer (2023 Tamil film) article are based on Track Tollywood; which isn't a reliable source. 𝓥𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷24𝓑𝓲𝓸 (ᴛᴀʟᴋ) 17:07, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PINKVILLA confirmed Leo (2023 Indian film) was the highest grossing Tamil film of 2023; which is a reliable source. 𝓥𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷24𝓑𝓲𝓸 (ᴛᴀʟᴋ) 17:09, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sources for my above statements can be found on the relevant articles (Jailer and Leo) and this Article page as well. 𝓥𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷24𝓑𝓲𝓸 (ᴛᴀʟᴋ) 17:11, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If the article says those are reliable sources, i think we should then use those instead of unreliable sources. Espenthordsen (talk) 06:45, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you to the righteous people for correcting the article as it should be. I am tired of the annoying brats like NaanReady, Juvalkjolly or Sid95Q constantly changing the box office to their interests. People need to accept the fact that LEO is the #1 highest grossing Tamil film of 2023, period. Dashan Ghasan (talk) 10:00, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The numbers are 595–615 crore for Leo and 605 crore for Jailer. Doesn't it make more sense to consider the lower limit, especially when that number is given by Box Office India and when South Indian films are notorious for inflating box office numbers. When at least one good source says that Jailer is ahead of Leo, Leo's status as #1 can be disputed. Most of Vijay's recent films have higher numbers on Pinkvilla than Box Office India. Many of the news articles often post numbers found on Wikipedia (WP:MIRROR), numbers that are announced by the film's producers, or numbers from unreliable sources like Sacnilk. Isn't it right to give more importance to sources like Box Office India? @Dashan Ghasan Calling other editors brats is the not the right way to establish your opinion.

Box Office India only covers Hindi films, and no South Indian film industry has a website of the same credibility, covering definitive BO info. Therefore, Leo's BO info continues to remain unclear. Kailash29792 (talk) 10:36, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Box Office India often publishes worldwide gross numbers for South Indian films as well. We have added a range of figures at the article of Leo. When it comes to the highest-grossing lists, shouldn't we consider the lower limit of those numbers,i.e. 595 crore for Leo. Otherwise it is probably unfair to the other film Jailer which has likely grossed more than Leo.

Vijay's Leo grossed more than Rajinikanth's Jailer.

The official poster released by the makers is proof, as well as these 2 links https://www.sacnilk.com/news/Thalaivar_169_2023_Box_Office_Collection_Day_Wise_Worldwide https://www.sacnilk.com/news/Blockbuster_Leo_Final_Worldwide_Box_Office_Collection_and_Records Spyderkavin (talk) 23:32, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done for now: Unfortunately, if the numbers are reported on the movies' own posters, they count as a self published source, and Wikipedia shouldn't have self published sources in articles. Also, the website doesn't seem very reliable, at first glance. If you can find a more reliable source (e.g. Times of India) that would warrant adding that. thetechie@enwiki: ~/talk/ $ 00:12, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are some reliable sources too like PINKVILLA; We already have a discussion about this right in the previous section. Vestrian24Bio (UTACS) 01:41, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jailer and Leo (2)[edit]

It's been four months since the last discussion above which didn't exactly give a consensus; Now, I'm reopening this section as newer sources have become available, and we need a newer consensus again.

I Just listed the sources above; Irregardless of Verifiablity, even though I didn't add some very less trustworthy sites such as TOI, Sacknick etc. I marked the verified sources with a tick. If I had missed any sources let me know below.

The consensus needs to be taken for: Which film grosses how much and which was the higher??

Please ignore the non-RS such as IMDb or those taking info from non-RS (WP:FRUIT). Kailash29792 (talk) 02:18, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Still, RS such as PINKVILLA and News18 state that, Leo grossed higher than Jailer. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 02:21, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Reliable sources checked show Leo as highest grosser. Non checked are mostly unreliable sources that do not meet WP:ICTFSOURCES reliable list. RangersRus (talk) 14:17, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this discussion even necessary? The highest figure any source says Leo grossed is 620 crore. For Jailer, this figure is 650 crore.

  • Sources that favour Jailer:

(Vax'ildan Vessar (talk) 12:25, 1 June 2024 (UTC))[reply]

Well, the only South Indian source here PINKVILLA says: Leo grossed more than Jailer and is the Highest grossing Tamil film of 2023 Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 12:51, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Who says Pinkvilla is South Indian ? Maybe do some research before commenting ? In any case, I don't even think that matters. Does ANY rule state that only South Indian sources can comment on South Indian films ? A different user tried to push the same narrative on the article of Leo.
Pinkvilla is headquartered in North India, and the articles you have shared are written by Jatinder Singh, who is clearly North Indian. So how is Pinkvilla any more reliable than these other sources ?
(Vax'ildan Vessar (talk) 13:51, 1 June 2024 (UTC))[reply]
I didn't mean its South Indian; I meant its the closest to most reliable for South Indian content – and, its usual for local sources to have better coverage rather than foreign sources. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 14:56, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pinkvilla isn't a local source. Vax'ildan Vessar (talk) 15:10, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is Indian compared to The Week Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 15:12, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unlike the other sources PINKVILLA at least has a south Indian coverage with a separate sub-vertical for it. and its also the top entertainment portal in India according to Comscore. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 15:17, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody said Pinkvilla is unreliable. You are acting as if other sources should be ignored for the sake of Pinkvilla. Vax'ildan Vessar (talk) 15:21, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Week is owned by Kerala-based newspaper Malayala Manorama. Vax'ildan Vessar (talk) 15:19, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not saying that; the sources are contradicting each other and we need consensus on which one to be agreed upon. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 15:39, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
These sources say about Jailer's gross but, only one compares it with Leo. While, PINKVILLA clearly states "Leo as the highest grossing Tamil film of 2023" Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 15:44, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
kindly remove the box office India 595 crore source from Leo article box office India source cannot track South India Tamil films gross its only for north Indian films and even many times they mention the nett as gross it is purely a confusing site for box office numbers and it was a blog before so kindly remove it. Thanks 2A09:CD43:F:42B9:0:0:0:1 (talk) 19:29, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, they have clearly mentioned the worldwide gross in their article. Also, do you have any evidence for Box Office India being a blog before ? Box Office India is a reliable source according to WP:ICTF. This is all that matters.
Also, there is no such divide as North India and South India. Can some people stop with this hideous narrative. There is also no agreement that some sources are reliable for North India and some are for South India. The user who started this discussion @Vestrian24Bio hails from Sri Lanka according to their page. From their comments, it is evident that they have no real idea about Indian newspapers, magazines and sources, and just decided to go about preaching this weird idea.
