History of the title (of the merged former Dab) "Hippodameia"[edit]

The following contrib is copied from Talk:Hippodameia, which talk page will become a Rdr to here; the section title is changed (from "History of the title") for clarity.

The accompanying page Hippodameia began as a Rdr to Hippodamia on 10 December 2003. (That target had begun, 3 months before, as an article on the dau of Oenomaus but been supplemented by the same editor a quarter hour later to open with a minimal stub on the bride of Pirithous.) Two years later, the Rdr was retargeted to Briseis (a.k.a. Hippodamia), the dau of Briseus, and another year later (2007) re-purposed (expanded?) to a Dab that has grown to 4 entries.
The information on the various pages supports my general impression that the choices of transliteration to -ia, -iea, or -ea reflect taste in classical scholars, rather than the Greek spelling, and my opinion is that

the dau of Oeonmaus got the title Hippodamia (the most anglicized) bcz the multi-stub article came along first and got that title, and always had her as its largest topic, so that she got the single title when (on 22 October 2006) the rest of the multi-stub was split out to (surprise) Hippodamia (disambiguation), while
the Rdr Hippodameia got converted to the accompanying Dab simply bcz hijacking the Rdr for that purpose was easy and civil, but not bcz the name is more correct.

I am about to merge the two Dabs at Hippodamia (disambiguation), and i may flip a coin to decide whether to target Hippodameia and Hippodamea to the Dab or the dau of Oenomaus. Even if i were inclined to pick the winner of Hippodamia, i'd feel comfortable with the 3,844-byte long article (with a good name of its own) deferring to the established 1,581-byte Hippodamia that is the longest of those without other "good names", but what i'm choosing is really just the least disruption and effort, without prejudice to those who would like to see Hippodamia reassigned.

There is no place on a Dab page for the following:

(English translation: "tamer of horses") is an etymologically derived from the Greek terms hippos ("horse") and damazo ("to tame").

Perhaps it should be used elsewhere.
