Gershon Baskin Left-Wing[edit]

I recently sources a Jerusalem Post article saying that Gershon Baskin is left-wing. It was reverted due to WP:UNDUE WEIGHT and WP:REDFLAG. Regarding the undue weight, we can find a different place for it in the article. Regarding the redflag, I found an array of additional sources indicating that he is left-wing, including a Twitter post by Baskin himself stating "I am a left-wing Zionist.". So in addition to this self admission, we also have the Jerusalem Post (a paper that he writes for), the Jewish Press, and a post on his own website that calls him left-wing. I would say this is sufficient to make the claim that he is left-wing, wouldn't you? Eym174 (talk) 04:50, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the sources. I find the Jewish Press, which uses "left-wing" as an epithet, somewhat less than impressive ("Gershon Baskin, a prominent left-wing activist and the architect of the outrageous Gilad Shalit prisoner swap") but the others seem good, especially Baskin's tweet. Thanks again. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 01:18, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nice to see you two here :) I'm concerned about the tweet as a self-published source. We can't rely on it for the article, especially in a BLP. I put in language relying on the JPost article. PPX (talk) 15:32, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree about the self-published source being a problem. See WP:SELFSOURCE. So long as several criteria are met (and I think they are satisfied in this instance), self-published sources can be used as sources about themselves. (In other words, "be careful what you say about yourself" ) — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 03:46, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Shabazz. It looks like all the criteria cited in WP:SELFSOURCE are met. Eym174 (talk) 05:57, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I stand corrected. I was feeling extra conservative with this being a BLP. But WP:BLPSELFPUB covers this. PPX (talk) 16:29, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Shabazz, I see you reverted my edit: "left-wing social and political activist? source?" As you see from the revert, I didn't add the fact that he was a "social and political activist," just the fact that he was left wing to which I provided 2 sources.
It seems that your issue is not with my edit, as we concluded that he is left-wing and there are sources, but with the previous description. If that is the issue, then we can either 1. try to find a source to back it up (for which I don't have time atm), or 2. remove it and add the left wing description in a new sentence. What do you prefer? Eym174 (talk) 11:38, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't misrepresent your edit. You moved 'left-wing" from one part of the paragraph to another. Read the sentence as you left it: "He is a left-wing social and political activist..." In the future, please preview your work before you save it. — MShabazz Talk/Stalk 16:50, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think you might of misunderstood. There is no misrepresentation whatsoever as I clearly explained why the edit was made. The way the article was, stated that "He is a social and political activist" and "That paper has described him as holding left-wing political views." As we concluded, it is not only "that paper" that calls him left-wing, rather he calls himself left-wing. Given this, the way the article is now makes it seem like only Jerusalem Post defines him as left wing, which isn't the case. It is for that reason that I correctly moved the title of left-wing to be describing him and sourced it with his own Twitter post indicating that that this is correct.
Please explain to me what your issue is. Did we not conclude that he is left-wing? Is it therefore not correct to edit the article to reflect this? What exactly from my edit is not in line with the sources we have? Eym174 (talk) 17:03, 26 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that you combined sources that describe Baskin as left-wing with a statement that he is a social and political activist, and made up your own "fact": that Baskin is a left-wing social and political activist. Then you lied about what you did. And you're still oblivious.
Please read WP:SYNTH. You can't combine material from multiple sources to reach a conclusion (left-wing social and political activist) that isn't in any of the sources. — MShabazz Talk/Stalk 17:21, 26 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I do not know where this animosity is coming from, but it is highly uncalled for. As I explained, I did not make up any such thing. In fact, I would have liked to remove the the part about the social and political activist - which wasn't even sourced - but almost every time I make an edit you revert it without explanation so I did not want to do that again. So how about we remove that part and put in the fact about him being left-wing that is sourced. Instead of assuming ill-intent, let's please try to better the articles.
