Is there any explanation for the double spelling of his name (Poblicius in the long version, Publicius in the short)? (@Llywrch:) José Luiztalk 20:26, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good question @Jbribeiro1:, because the spelling "Poblicius" evokes the famous semi-legendary Republican hero P. Valerius Poblicola; on the other hand, he is a member of the gens Quinctius, another venerable patrician family, so the need of making this connection appears unnecessary. However, except for the fact that spelling in no Western language was standardized before 1700, so this connotation may be entirely accidental. I suspect "Publicius" would be the more familiar spelling. My authority for spelling his name 2 different ways is the examples Olli Salomies provides in his discussion of Poblicus Marcellus. Doing a search in the Epigraphik Datenbank at edce.eu shows several examples of "Poblicius" in the short version. In short I don't have an explanation, although I don't think there a significance to the different spellings. -- llywrch (talk) 22:13, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
