Is there any reference available to confirm "the almost constant southerly wind". Personally I find this "fact" hard to believe - some more detailed weather observations or weather summary would be useful, including temperature ranges observed at South Pole (for example), or a link to such. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iceseismic (talkcontribs) 03:52, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Area[edit]

I can't get Google to tell me the area of the Antarctic Plateau.

The area according to the text of the article is 500 km radius => 0.785 million km².

The area I estimate using the map at East Antarctica is;

2.86 million km² above 3000 m.
3.43 million km² above 2800 m.

The 2800 m is cited by a few sites.

[1] says the South Pole is at 2800 m and is on the plateau.

[2] says the plateau is at 2800 m.


. . . This makes it bigger than the Tibetan plateau;

2.5 million km².
