Faridunnahar Laili (born: December 12, 1954) is a Bangladeshi politician, entrepreneur, valiant freedom fighter, and an honorable Member of Parliament for the reserved women's seat in the 12th National Assembly. [1]

Faridunnahar Laili is currently serving her third term as the Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives of the central committee of the Awami League. Previously, she served as the Secretary for Relief and Social Welfare of the central committee of the Bangladesh Awami League. She also held the position of Senior Joint General Secretary of the Bangladesh Women's Awami League.

Family Life[edit]

Valiant freedom fighter Faridunnahar Laili was born on December 12, 1954, in a distinguished Muslim family in Gorapur village, Nowannoi Union, Noakhali district.[2] She is the third child of the late Saidur Rahman and the late Mahamuda Begum. Faridunnahar Laili completed her higher secondary education at Comilla Government Women's College and obtained her Bachelor’s (B.A. Honours) and Master’s (M.A) degrees from the University of Chittagong. Her late husband, Shah Akbar, was a prominent businessman and politician. Their only son, S.M. Akbar Jafri, completed his MBBS from Dhaka Medical College and is currently working at Tejgaon Thana Healthcare Complex. His wife is serving in the Bangladesh Army.

Political Life[edit]

Inspired by the ideals of Bangabandhu, Faridunnahar Laili began her political journey through the Bangladesh Chhatra League. She served as the General Secretary and Vice President of the Chhatra League at Comilla Government Women's College. She directly participated in the 1969 mass movement. Following the instructions and leadership of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she actively supported the liberation war and participated directly in the war to liberate Bangladesh. She earned her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Political Science from the University of Chittagong. During her university life, she was a very popular political figure and served as the elected VP of Shamsunnahar Hall at the University of Chittagong. From the moment of Sheikh Hasina's arrest on January 11, 2007, until her release, she, along with the leaders and activists of the Women's Awami League, continuously protested in front of the sub-jail. She has been imprisoned numerous times for political reasons. Faridunnahar Laili is currently serving her third term as the Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives of the central committee of the Awami League.[3] Previously, she served as the Secretary for Relief and Social Welfare of the central committee of the Bangladesh Awami League and held the position of Senior Joint General Secretary of the Bangladesh Women's Awami League.

In her professional life, she is serving as the Chairman of Zenith Islami Life Insurance Limited. [4]
