The Captain is point-and-click adventure game developed by Swedish studio Sysiac Games. It was released on December 3, 2021 for Microsoft Windows, MacOS and Linux.[1] It was later released for Nintendo Switch on December 20, 2022.[2] Set in the year 3383, the player assumes the role of Captain Welmu who must travel back to earth to stop it from being destroyed by an alien threat.

Gameplay[edit]

The gameplay is split into two sections: optional space ship combat, which functions as a Turn-based battle, and Point-and-click Adventures which comprises most of the game and some of which are required to complete the story.

In the point-and-click sections the player controls the protagonist Captain Welmu via selecting objects to look at or interact with. When interacting with characters, dialogue can be chosen from prewritten responses which usually do not impact the course of the story. The player has access to 18 'planets' along the way to earth, which act as distinct point-and-click adventures. These stories all have 3 endings which the player can choose through their actions. The endings give the player set rewards for completion, some of which include items or ship crew who can give the player extra abilities in the ship combat sections.[3]

Plot[edit]

In the year 3383 The Union launches their entire fleet to attack earth with a super-weapon called the sunblaster which will end all life on earth. Captain Welmu, an earth scientist, gets transported in an accident far from earth. He finds himself nearby 3 fuel cells which can be used to stop the sunblaster once it reaches earth. The player then can go to several planets which have self contained stories, only a few of which are required to finish the game. Welmu's wife is captain on an earth space station, if the player does not reach earth in a sufficient amount of time she dies, but the player can still stop the destruction of earth without her.

Reception[edit]

The Captain received generally positive reviews from players. It has received a 91% on Steam reviews[4] and a 7.8/10 on Metacritic.[5] Aaron Price of WayTooManyGames gave it an 8/10.[6]
