Back in 2016, an 18 year old named Jong Yol Ri was wanted to escape from North Korea. North Korea is a country known for having little to no freedom. Because of that, Jong Yol Ri knew he wouldn’t have a future. But luckily for him, he was a math prodigy and in the North Korea’s Math Olympiad Team. Their next competition was in Hong Kong and that was his chance to escape. When he told his dad, surprisingly his dad was very supportive even though his dad knew him and his family would suffer a harsh punishment or maybe death. He wanted his son to live the life he never got to live. His father gave him all of the money he’s saved his whole life which was around 200$. On the day of the competition, right after Jong Yol Ri won the silver medal, he flew to the South Korean Consulate in Hong Kong for safety. The staff were so inspired by his bravery, to the point where they let him stay in an off limits conference room in the building. They provided him with food, games, a treadmill, and some police officers for safety. 80 days later, he was granted a new passport to fly to South Korea. In 2017, Jong Yol Ri started a new life as a university student.
