Here lived, on the banks ofthe sacred Bhagirathee, the famous RaniBhowani, whospent enormous sums of money in founding endowmentsand charitable institutions and gave away rent freelands to numerous Brahmins. She was a most talentedlady, possessing extraordinary business habits. Herpiety and devotion were unparalled and her good nameas a pious, devout, liberal and actively benevolent ladyhas become a household word in Bengal.
