SOUTH iHROUGH LEON AND CASTILE. 59 East from Medina del Campo about sixty miles is Segovia, ancientlya Roman city, a fortified place, and with an aqueduct (likewise ascribedto the times of Trajan) as its noblest structure. It brings water froma point nine miles away, and has arches one hundred feet in height.

SALAMANCA. The grand monuments of Segovia are three in number : the aqueductthe alcazar, or Moorish citadel, and its cathedral. The aqueduct iseighteen centuries old, the alcazar nine centuries, and the cathedral(built 1525) occupies the site of another dating its construction fromthe eleventh.
